Subject: Spaces outside PRE
I differ from Dale on this: extra white space should be
collapsed outside of PRE. A sentence that happens to be typed this
way shouldn't be formatted differently than one that is spaced normally.
The reason is that you then have to pay excruciating attention to these
spaces.
I do notice that there seems to be no way to get white space when you
want it in xmosaic, so there needs to be some provision for that. But
double spaces are not the way.
Tabs are also another matter. Perhaps their effectiveness should be
restricted to a tabbing environment. Some examples from the group of
how people would like to use tabs outside of PRE would be helpful to
this discussion.
